split poly

i saw on the ear tutorial somone clicking multiple points inside a poly and then another edge to stop the tool. The only way i have been able to use split poly is by clicking two edges with the subdivisions up. I tried unclicking the snap tos but it will only let me get one line. Are there more settings i have to play with? Why wont the tool work right?

What I lack in skill I make up for with enthusiasm.

I think you mean you want to create vertices in the face then end on the edge. Zero magnets, 0 tolerance, snap to edge off, effect shown below.
