Problem when working with polygon faces

HEy guys, I've been building a circular turret that can be found on Hoth (from Star Wars) and am having problems with extrude face. When I render the turret without any extruded faces on the outside circumference of the cylinders, everything looks ok. However, if I want to add extra detail such as an inset grill on the outside circumference, and I do this by extruding faces, rezing the faces, and pushing or pulling the face. When I render this, however, you can see lines in the blinn texture where the face was extruded and pushed in or pulled out. How can I add extra detail to the turret without this problem occuring?

You know if you extrude a face -- all the edges inside the face will create a face aswell... what I think is happening is you're creating perpendicular faces inside your extrusions.

For example -- take a rectangle made up of 9 faces (3x3, like a tictactoe board) and extrude it up... regardless of if all the faces are combined to a single object. You will not get a box from that extrusion... you will get 9 boxes.

two, things... first is to check for "keep faces together" when extruding so that you don't get internal faces... second I wouldn't bother applying a material to the surface until you're done modeling it. If you could post a screen capture you may get different or more detail answers.

Hey again,

I didn't see the option for "Keep faces together" in the extrude face option box. Here is a screenshot of the cannon, with the problem circled in red. In case you can't see what I did with the extrude face, I extruded a single face, scaled it down, and then extruded it inwards to make a tiny box. As you can see, it shines up the texture and, I'm assuming, makes it uneven.

you will need to delete the faces between the two boxes, go into your mesh and get a good view of the interior and look for the faces inside of the box, delete the two faces and drag select the outside vertices they were attacked to and Merge the Vertices. (Make sure the Merge Vertices is set to default.)

Hmm, if I delete the faces inside the two boxes, won't that allow me to see through to the inside of the model?

(Edit) Oh yea and to reply to an earlier post, I do have keep faces together turned on.
