Mapping help

Before I tell you my problem, I would use the search feature though I don't know the correct term for what Iam trying to do.

I am creating a low poly character and obviously want to incorporate high detail in the model. How can i create raised surfaces on the character, ( make the pockets look 3d etc, bump mapping??) Anyone know of any tutorials that could explain this etc.

Cheers

I think the term I was looking for was displacement mapping, does anyone know where I can get a tutorial or some info that explains what this is? I've spent ages searching but end up with the same tutorials which really skip over the basics.

They're quite handy links, but I'm still unsure how to use this logic into making 3d looking pockets, and creases in a jacket etc. user added image
