Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

hard objects and cloth

ok im trying to make a piece of clothing thats basically kind of like a light armor. what i wanted to do was make the body clothed and some shoulder armor and a neck piece a hard material. Now my question is how wouldi go about connecting the cloth and the solid pieces together or is that even possible? I'm only using maya 6 btw if that makes any difference.

have you tried using a mesh consraint. all you have to do is make sure your in the cloth menu set then select the verticies of your cloth then shift select the solid object or in your case the armor then click the mesh constraint button and that should connet the two togather
