Alpha Channels in Mental Ray

Hi, I just started playing around with Mental Ray Shaders, so this may be a basic question, but I can't seem to figure it out. I applied one of the shaders to a simple sphere, just to see how it looks, and while it renders color, it doesn't have an alpha channel. Do I have to turn this on? If so where?

in the MR render setting find the custom entities and turn on alpha pass
