No clue what to do

I want to keep the edges sharp around the hole when I smooth it, but as you can see, inserting and edge loop will also prevent the top part from being evenly smoothed.

Is there any way to keep the edges of the hole sharp, but keep the top rounded?

cant you just spread out the verts along the top? and then convert to sub-d's and make them rounder if they need to be?

Acid: I'll try that, but the vertical one you drew isn't an edge loop.

Wod: I could, but that has led to some ugly results in the past. I'll still try it again though.

Mirek: I still want the top to be smooth, but I want it to be rounded. The edge loop I want to add will keep it from rounding.
