how come i dont have a keep faces planar option?

so one day a few months ago i finished doing most of maya's tutorials and decided to model one of my models which i didn't think would be too hard because it looked like it was just polygons stuck together

so anyway... whilst modeling i found that many of my faces would become multi-shaded and it would render with different shades of the material colour it had been assigned

sometimes i found that the face wasn't flat (i later learned the correct term is planar) and that appeared to be the result of the problem as i would move some verticies around and the colours would change

now in some video tutorial i found somewhere (i dont remember where) the interface had options for keeping faces together and keeping faces planar

i'm using maya 2008 and i've found the keep faces together but keeping it planar is nowhere to be found.

after getting fed up with the faces continously becoming non-planar and multi-shaded i decided to take a better look for this option, but alas it is nowhere to be found

so i did what any good human would do and i went to the help files in maya and did a search for 'keep faces planar' and it returned with the option being in the 'create polygon' tool

but i'm not making polygons, i'm changing the position of the vertices so the faces resemble the model better....

so whats the new name for 'keep faces planar' ? or has that been wiped out completely deemed deprecated and been replaced with a more efficient tool to make faces planar that was not covered in the tutorials (well not that i seen anyway)
