Problem selecting faces!

Hey, I've been using Maya now for about 6 weeks and just installed it on my home computer, however, I have strange issue when selecting faces.

It's as if it ignores the face my cursor is pointing at and goes directly on to the other side, as you can see in the screenshot

(Sorry, the cursor isn't displayed, but I'm pointing towards one of the slices on the front but it's choosing to ignore the face and go directly through it)

It runs smoothly, everything else works fine.
I checked specs and everything seems to be in check.
I've tried deleting userprefs but that changed nothing.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

check the back face culling
Display/Polygons> Back face Culling
This will set it for that individual object.

If you want it for all new objects that have not been created yet go to:
Window/Settings&Preferences>Preferences
Polygons
turn on Back face Culling
