What problems/disadvantages are caused by deleting edges

Just a question I've been wondering for some time now.

Well, if you're talking about simply selecting edges and hitting the `delete` key then you could end up with stranded verts but that has its advantages like if you wanted to get rid of the edges but keep the shape because you're going redraw the topology.
