Creating/applying an ideal texture

Is there any way to create or somehow apply a texture so that it doesnt look stretched on a model and you dont have to.increase its repetitiveness substantially(which looks really bad)?

Thanks

for example, the stone texture applied to the bridge looks really stretched, is there any way that i can apply this texture so that it doesn't look stretched (something other than making the texture very repetitive)....or is there some way to make a larger version of this texture so that it "finely" covers the whole bridge with minimal to no stretching
