Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

Invisible Light?

Hey Guys! user added image

I have set up a user ibl env, backplate etc...

Now i have the checkerboard as a ground and another plane for the shadows.

I installed some additional arealights to increase the effect.

The problem is it seems that only my two spheres catch the arealights?!?!
Its a mia material x passes material on all of the objects that are standing on the checker/chessplane.
But only the spheres catch the light.

I dont get it. How is this possible??

Please help, because I am freaking out about this confusing thing user added image

Cheers

Have you add the meshes that are not getting the light to your render pass layer.........dave

Very good Point, but unfortunately I only have the masterlayer set up.
Now i tried to make a new layer with all objects but the same problem.

The objects have the same material but except for the spheres and the checkerplane they dont catch the area lights.

If I turn the arealights off they render exact the same. But the spheres and the plane become dark as they should become. :/

I tried to change the user ibl env to a normal IBL with final gather, but same problem.

Also checked that. Nothing that could cause the problem

The mesh on the beetle is getting some strange highlight, try creating a box and bevel the edges and assign the shader to it. I think there is some thing wrong with those meshes...........dave

Edit:are the normal facing the correct way

So i modeled 2 new boxes. 1 smooth the other normal bevel.
Everything seems fine.
The VW Beetle and the "wireframe"cube were imported from another scene. But the long box left to the wirecube was created just like the beveled boxes right now.

I dont get the problem. Its the exact material.

I think the box is getting the light but you are rendering at the wrong angle to see it(put a little bevel on it and see). I think you have a problem with the beetle and the cube thing, check the render setting of those meshes............dave

Ouh yes you are right. The long box is totally fine.
Just the 2 imported objects.
I already checked everything through the Attribute Spread Sheet. Everything is exactly the same.

What can be the problem?

Or how am i supposed to import these objects? As obj or ASCII or mb ? Uncheck materials or what?

The normals are fine.

I tried to import in different methods now, and I found out that it is working by importing in OBJ with all the options unchecked. Like material and everything.

So I guess this is the way to go.

I hate it when Maya makes your life even harder, instead of supporting you and motivating you.

Thanks again Dave for the help! user added image
