I did a cleanup, but which vertices am i merging and how (sorry im really new to maya)

Sure no problem. The highlighted edges are two edges almost on top of each other (Inside of chest has same problem). Easiest is to select all the vertices of the chest section and go Edit Mesh -> Merge Options (Little square) and enter a threshold of 0.01 and merge. The value is low enough to only merge the vertices on the those edges.

The final test, after the merge, is to select the vertex on the corner. There should only be one.

The same problem. Clean up did not help;(
