Need help- mesh appears deformed (beginner)

I'm modelling a blade in Maya and encountered the following problem. Part of my mesh appears deformed as can be seen in the second screenshot. The model has UV mapping and the vertices are merged after combining the original and duplicated backside. How can I fix the problem?

Check the normals. Could be that some are reversed.

Could be some laminate faces in there, did you delete shared faces when you merged.............dave

It wasn't the normals but I fixed it- some vertices had to be connected.
