how to set-up a simple character

hey guys, i'm looking to create a rig for practicing animation, i just want to link up a basic character made up of simple geometric shapes. should i go ahead and create the character and then create a skeleton for it, or can i just link the individual pieces together or..? i've got really no idea where to start so any help is appreciated, thanks.

There a couple of good places to start. The first would be the Maya help files (F1 on your keyboard). There's a chapter that introduces character rigging. The second place would be the skeleton tutorial video in the Free Training section of this site. And, of course, you can always ask questions on the forums and on IRC. People will be glad to help, myself included. user added image

thanks danny, i've gone thru most of the modeling tutes within maya but hadn't gotten to the character rigging ones yet, looks like they're next on the list now. i'm doing my best not to get overwhelmed with everything i've got to learn user added image
