Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

rendering question

I recently attempted to render my first animation, and after 1 day I had only rendered 84 frames, is this normal?

1.6 ghz
wildcat 760
1 gig ram
640X480
intermediate
depth map shadows
displacement

It also takes a few minutes just for the batch render to start.

Do animations realy take this long to render in Maya.

I know it is proportionate to the scene, but it seems too long.

I just placed a sphere on a plane, moved it a little in 'x', tried to render 20 frames, and it still took over a half hour?

What is the most efficient, and expedient way to render animations in Maya. I am a former Max user, and it rendered MUCH quicker.

thanks.

Hardware Q's:
-you say your proc is 1.6 ghz, but is it a P2 or P3, or P4, or AMD?
-What is your mobo's buss speed?

Anyhoo, displacement would be my first guess as to why it may be taking to long.
Also, do you have a screenshot you could show us consering your displaced object(s).

More than one displaced object obviously will add to the calculation time too.

..sry man, just shootin in the dark hereuser added image

Did you try both software and hardware rendering?

Yeah, I think I need to realize that it takes a while to rener at full resolution. I am working with the parameters.

thanks for the replies.

I would say it might be the displacement maps as Rage mentioned. Take them out just to see how fast it renders and you will be able to conclude whether or not those are what's causing your problems if you want.

Those were part of the problem, you are correct. I took them out and more that cut the time in half.

thanks.
