Hydraulics n Skeletons

Hi peepz...i was wondering about the hydraulic/gas type shock absorbers that you see on some models...mainly mechs an stuff.
Lets say i didnt want the shock absorber/dampener around the skeleton but as part of it. I mean if i did a robots/mechs leg and wanted the leg itself to act like a shock absorber around the shin area (the shin would just be the shock absorber) how would i go about doing that, i know theres other ways like having them seperate like on the robot dog tutorial but this isnt what im after, it needs to be part of the skeleton ....thx in advance.
