Poly smooth prob.

I seam to be having a poly curse latley.
a model I've been working for several weeks all of a suden does not want to smooth properly.
Tried old file and worked fine, so somthing changed to it,user added image

have you tried using the cleanup tool before you smooth it?

No, tried it just now as default settings and no change.

found out what was causing the problem, the mesh doubled, as in if you pull a cv, u notice their is another one behind it with full edgs. Outliner does not reveal a double. I highlighted the whole mesh and used merge vertices. Only saw it when I used "4" shader, "5" it was hidden.
Any idea how I managed to double the whole edges ? user added image
