Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

Black Faces...

Hey everyone, I am having a bit of a glitch in Maya, and was wondering if anyone could help me out with my problem. Whenever I am in shaded mode, some faces seem to go black. I have attached an image to show you guys what I mean......Can anyone help me out with this one?

Regards

Wierd I have seen grey like that before but not black.... maybe make sure the black areas dont have 2 faces stuck together... or see if the normal are facing the same way.

Try :

Edit Polygons > Normals > Set Vertex Normals.

Hey guys thanx for the suggestions.

Kurt.....I checked all the normals and they are all facing the same way, and i also double checked the 2 faces thing, and it's all good. It's wierd when I move around in my viewport the black dissapears and moves onto other faces....WIERD???

Mtmckinley....Thanx 4 the help. I am using NURBS for the model though, any idea with any NURBS commands like that?

this is definately not a video card driver problem...

Whenever I am in shaded mode, some faces seem to go black. I have attached an image to show you guys what I mean

how can this be a NURBS model and u have "faces" that turn black.

this is a common thing in polygonal modeling. usually set normals to face or like mike said set vertex normals solves that problem.
i really doubt videocard drivers has anything to do with this....

Hey vladimirjp......I meant to say NURBS surfaces....anyway, I have recently formatted to win2000 and updated drivers and it is still doing the same thing, but whenever I click on the actual surface the black dissapears. This is one wierd case, yip yip.

Have you checked the direction of the surface normals?
("Display>NURBS Components>Normals (Shaded Mode)")

I have to agree with the 2nd response from mtm. Just take it one step further;
Edit Polygons > Normals > Set Vertex Normal > Options
Unlock Normals might be off. TURN THEM ON
