Looks awesome. The thing I really like about your designs are their simplicity. All the parts are integrated or designed together. I think most ships I see look like a bunch of junk put together but in real life the air and space vehicles are always integrated and the components protected by an outer skin. Only military ground vehicles have a lot of exterior type stuff but that is usually for predetonation of RPGs and some added ballistic protection.
I think simplicity is always the best. I see stuff on sites that win competitions, and as well as the models are made they are just way too fussy, you also want to be able to recognise what you're looking at without all the clutter. Thats why design is so important before even touching the programme itself. Wait til my site is up and see all the 2d stuff, theres more than 3d at the moment !!!
How did you assemble the texture for that. I've always wondered how to make the type of texture where it looks like its made of seperate smaller panels without looking like a grid bump map.
Well the texturing is basically 1-1 uv mapping, you know. For this I did planar on Y top and bottom and the side were thru either X or Z. Then just tided it all up and positioned them accordingly in uv space. They're 2048 res for these. Then into photoshop for the artwork. I do a hell of a lot of back and forth so stuff is positioned right, some times I might have to strech the bits back and forth depending if they look too stretched in areas. The engines are cylindrical mapped with separate shaders for each too. I duped one engine flipped uvs and re colored the map so it was different as well.
In some cases I will use Automatic mapping on vehicles but I prefer to do it 1-1 so I dont spend hour sewing the uvs together. Its okay for some stuff but most of the time I tend to avoid it.
