Combining Polys

I've discovered that if you combine 2 pieces of poly geometry, they each retain their own shading group.

What is the way of combining them so that they become a single piece of geometry with a single shading group? I think you can merge vertices but am hoping that there is an easier way. Thanks!

try re-assinging the shader to the object then delete history.
