Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

I'm no expert, and this is just using basic shapes, but how about the lightning effect? I'll attempt to attach an image. The glow could probably be turned down a bit on this.

if you really want to get the natural look of the lightsaber's blade like in star wars consider doing it in 2D rather than 3D...you might be able to pull it off in 3D but may not look like you want it...

and yeah, no glow like that you have way way too much aside from the actual blade

also consider building the hilt / handle in maya.. then using After Effects or an equivelant... to do some rotoscoping... just a suggestion.
