Also, I've noticed quite a large difference between card prices in terms of manufacturer (e.g. Compaq quite a bit cheaper than the PNY version of the Quaudro 4 card).

Is this just down to manufacturing reputation/quality or will a Compaq Quadro 4 card suffice?

Where are you looking for the prices? On pricewatch, compaq isn't cheaper than PNY, they're a fraction more expensive.

would be great if the drivers for quadro would work with the gf4 - but nvidia would not like that. why do they go for such high price, if all the difference is basically drivers?

2) NVIDIA® GeForce4™ Titanium 4600"

I would have liked the quadro4 but if you cant afford it the geforce 4 4600 ti is sweet.

Also I just went to a Maya demo at ATI in Marlboro MA USA last week on thier use of maya in thier demos of the new ATI 9700 that card also looked great!:banana:

The prices you found do include VAT right? I don't know much about the compaq card but i'd think there would be very little difference. I'm pretty sure compaq will design off the same refernce board.

right, im probably going to go totally against the grain here...

These cards that are sooo expensive are simply not worth it!

There is no way I would spend over £200 on a card, I remember when the g400 dual head matrox came out, I spent like £270 on it, but common lets be honest. grab your self any old 32 / 64 mg gforce card for £60 and it will do a job that most of us need!!

ok ...some things may be a little slow, but unless you are making money in the gfx industry by this "extra" bit of power then forget it.... its a waste of money

and in 6 months ...the £700 card will be £100! then you will really regret it

I have had "new card, after new card" and I will never buy an expensive one again..sure if I was loaded and really needed to spend money..

But £150 on a gfx card is the absoulute tops! but me, ill just grab a 64 mg geforce bargin basement card and it will work fine!

ive had problems with budget cards in the past but managed to make them last. i went all out and spent a fortune on my current card a few months ago and i agree
it really isnt worth it.

stick to 'consumer level' cards and avoid the professional bracket as there is just a completely unnecessary price increase on them.

if i was thinking of upgrading now i would be waiting for the nv30 for sure.

im quite dissapointed in it at the moment and might actually be sending it back for a cash refund next week so i can get an nv30 instead.

Performance in maya is BRILLIANT.
However in many other programs (Windows media player in anything higher than 1280 *1024 75hz actually resets my machine) its just awful.

As for the quadros, if you buy a xgl900 your basically getting a gf4 ti4600 overclocked with better opengl drivers. Afterall, you can actually overclock a ti4600 to an xgl900 by messing around with the card itself.

I was considering the same card at one point until i came accross some of the issues, just like you're experiencing, medial player etc and also some issues with dual AMD machines. As for the Quadro 4, they look like great all around cards. Having seen it benchmarked against other cards, including a Geforce 4600, the 4600 just couldn't touch it in the case of Maya.

If anyone can show some benchmarks with an overclocked 4600 against a quadro 4 750 xgl that gets within 20% of the Quadro in Maya, i may go for it.

well the only time ive seen an article on overclocking a geforce to a quadro actually made the card a 900xgl

it increased the clockspeed and became recognised as a 900xgl by the detonator drivers.

no idea where it was from but i seem to remember that they had a few benchmarks too.
