Polygonal Cylinder

Hey all, I'm pretty new to 3d modelling, infact I only started today. making a wheel, its going well but I have ran into a problem. Here is my problem:

- I create a polygonal cyclinder - (subdivision axis = 20)
- rotate it 90 degrees in the Z axis
- Go into faces mode
- Highlight all the faces on both ends, and press delete
- This leaves me with a hollow tube
- I want to make this tube thicker, so I highlight all the faces and go to "edit polygons" and then "extrude face".
- But when I do this, each face is extrudes but it breaks away from the faces next to it, so it ends up looking more like a cog or gear rather than a thick tube.

Can anyone help with out with my problem? I have spent a few hours trying to figure it out, but to no avail!!

Cheers,

Jord
