SubD to Polygon conversion problem

Hi

I am having trouble converting a subd object to a polygon object, I get these strange black faces around certain edges in the viewports as well as when I render.

Any suggestions as to how I can fix this problem?

maybe left over vertices.

try hitting the "3" keyuser added image to show maximum detail.

Those objects were converted from subd to polygon.

Using the mesh smoothing options only improves the quality of subd or nurbs meshes - I think, because it didn't help.

No left over vertex's either.

if these shots are of a ploy mesh u need to get rid of the 5 sided polys
look at the pic i added to see where to use the split poly tool

hope this helps but make sure that wen u use the split tool u make sure that the new verts are merged

also make sure u use the split poly tool on the back of the model to get rid of ne 5 sided faces

this should fix it if it is a poly mesh

i think its maybe something to do with the normals play with the normals options cause im not sure either mike or some one will know.

As far as I know it's an artifact of the conversion from sub-d to poly's. If you select the object in question and then go to Edit Polygons- Normals- soften/harden----open the option box and move the slider to all harden and the select apply, that should take care of the problem.

Thanks guys, soften/harden polys does the trick

Be warned though: you have to select the edges where these artifacts occur and apply varying degrees of smoothing to them to get rid of artifacts.

Applying Harden to a large rounded surface will produce faceting along edges.
