smooth polygon problem

hi there! I've got this problem: i want to model a head out of a polygon cube. after a tutorial i read, i delete half of the cube, then duplicate the remaining half as an instance. Now i extrude some middle faces for what's supposed to become the nose. But: when i try to smooth the whole thing, i get two noses like seen in the picture attached. how come? tried the options in the tool options but none worked for me. since i'm not so good at maya that i can create some sort of two-nosed alien i wonder how to solve this.

please excuse my noobieness

it's probably cos you have some faces in the middle - along the center line. make sure you delete them before smoothing.

Yup Arrans right, the extrude gives a face right on center line that comes out so when its smoothed it makes the above.
