Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping

smoot poly - paint weights question.

hi,

if I have my character and I want to bind it's skin to a skeleton, what's the best way to go ahead?
A) bind the skin, paint the weights and THEN go for a smooth poly, or
B) do it the other way round and smooth the poly mesh before I start painting any skin weights?

any suggestions much appreciated
