This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.
hey all, well i have modelled an egg, simple enough, but now i want to add a little cracked hole in in with an eye looking out, how would i cut a hole out of my egg geomatry please? im really stuck and need help
If you modeled the egg using polygons, you could simply use the split polygon tool to slice the geometry to create the cracked hole and just delete those faces.
Word to the wise! NEVER! EVER! EVER! use booleans! Stay away from them!
Start with the egg. Erase various faces by switching to Face mode. Delete a good part of them by selecting them and hitting delete. Switch to vertex mode and shape the vertices into the shape that you want by selecting them and using the move tool to move them around. Easy!
If you want to get a thickness of the egg form inside the hole. Switch to Edge mode. Select the edges that make the hole. Got to: Edit polygons>Extrude edge. This will extrude edges from the edges that you selected. Switch to the move tool and move the new edges inward inside the hole.
It's not a sure fire way to model. True you can erase the history, but if you look at the hypergraph and graph the inputs and outputs of the object you will see that Maya still considers it a boolean object and it keeps the info. This causes a whole lot of trouble when you want to rigg something and animate it. It's kinda like painted rust. It's looks good on the outside and gets the job done but underneath it's just a big ol' mess. My teacher's gave me a hard time about this when I first started using maya. It's not professional. Just trying to pass on some good advice.
