Check your custom polygon display options located in ---Display/ Custom Polygon display. There might be an option that is checked or unchecked thats causing the problem. I wish I could be more help.

Another thing is when I add a texture and the lights are turned on I can see the colors. for example is I take checkered under 2d and I put both colors the same and the lights are on it shows the colors...

In your shading group attributes there is a selection called Use Default Material. If it is checked then uncheck it, and see what happens. I kinda suspect that you have duplicated your object with the Use Default Material selected. Do you also have both objects selected in the pic?
Here is a pic of the attribute that I'm talking about.

When I turn that setting on I don't get colors period

With that white object,
Are you sure that the incandesent setting is to black? not white

I'm asking you to turn the setting off if it was on, and see if anything happened. Anyway, have you ever tried to reinstall the application and see if it happens again?
