This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

graphics card

What is a good graphics card to have to run Maya 2008 or 2009 for a PC

Gforce cards get my vote, though there are not officially qualfied.

Though I'm running a quadro at work, 2 X ATI 4800s at home and a quadro FX 3700m on my laptop and tbh theres no real difference between them.

ill second gforce, also if you know where to go you can get some pretty good deals on them

The geforces are hit and miss with Maya, so you may be kicking yourself with it.

If you are not a big gamer, then spend the extra money for a Quadro or FireGL. These will give you better performance in 3d applications as they are geared to OpenGL, not DirectX which the gaming cards, Geforces for example, favour.

Make sure you do your homework by searching google, and look for people's issues with certain graphics cards. We had Geforce's at our studio, and they had many problems. The new Radeon's that we have installed seem to work just fine however.

I guess it all depends how much you are willing to spend and what else youd be using it for

Theres a lot of talk over on CG talk re the gforces, they seem to work fine when you adjust some settings, I personaly have never had a problem using them from the 4XXX series up to the 8XXX series.

I did have problems with some older radions 1300 and 1600's they were rubbish, textures didnt display correctly, no HQ rendering or shadowing etc. The new one I have the 4800 is perfect. Also Ive never really seen much/any of a difference between the quadros and the Gforces/radions when it comes to maya, only maybe texture display.

I would steer clear of ATI gamecards, they are rubbish (not the hardware more the driversets)

The difference between a Quadro and a GForce used to be about viewport performance(more, bigger and better textures faster replay on animations in the viewport), but somehow Maya feels sluggish to me since 2008 and i have a quadro 4600 with a dual quad core machine.

I now Maya doesn't use multiple cores for better performance or makes use of GPU acceleration (Real time HDRI, multicore app, gpu acceleration etc) i agree with G-ster and you get a geforce.

I hope that maya 2010 just has the forementioned improvements so i can justify my Workstation user added image
