Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Turning Off This Bloody Virtual Assistant

So, I must have inadvertantly hit a hotkey which turns on some kind of virtual assitant. I'm sitting here working away in maya, and every 2 or 3 minutes, some guy's voice gives me a tip related to whatever task I am doing.

This is getting so damned annoying I'm about to re-install Maya. I've looked all over google and can't find how to turn it off. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks
-Cnotey

Yea it was very strange. Like If I started combining meshes, some guys voice came through my headphones and told me how to use the combine tool. I just ended up re-setting my preferences like you said and it went away.

Now I have to re-map all my hotkeys, arg!!

Thanks again Dave!

that is why I have learned to make a backup of my preferences. They become corrupted to often and I can't afford to spend a day reinstalling all my scripts, plugins, and hotkeys. So once I have a stable setup I make a backup of my entire maya folder. This way when I inadvertently turn some goofy ass option on or maya takes a brain dump I just replace the maya folder with the backup.

Deleting all your prefs can make things harder than necessary sometimes you can just go through and switch out some of the mel files like 'userPrefs.mel' until you find what's broken. It saves you from the horror or remaking prefs from scratch.

yes userPrefs.mel is the usual culprit. I just make a couple of the entire maya folder and swap it in when things go wonky. Which happens a lot more in maya 2012
