Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

yep do what dave suggests.

When you extrude there is an option to turn off keep faces together. But it is a common, especially when you are just learning, to forget to turn it back on.

So no worries and Dave has yah covered there.

hi again,
Oddly enough the keep faces together box was ticked. could it be something in the geometry?
-cheers

really? I do not know of any way that would happen with that box checked. The faces would have to be not connected and they do not look to be.

can you upload the file and I will have a look at it?

I am pretty sure that what has happened is in polyextrude node keep faces together is off but in the edit mesh tab it is on. Not sure how it got turned off when you did the initial extrude.

Watch this to see what I mean. You can see what I mean by checking it under the edit mesh tab vs in the polyExtrude node.

nope. I just looked at the geometry and you have a bunch of lamina faces and some separated surfaces. Making a recording to show you what is wrong...

It's kind of funny I mentioned in the video above the only way you could have the keep faces together and still get independent extrusions would be of the faces were somehow not connected. But I discounted that as being improbably as it would be hard to do by accident. But never underestimate the ingenuity of new users to find a way...

The video is encoding and will show you the problem, how to detect it in the future, and how to fix it....

The video is encoding now and will show you the problem, how to detect it in the future, and how to fix it....

So no need to start over and you get a few more tips to help you out as this kind of thing also happens from time to time so learning how to recognize it now and fix it is a good thing.

hi ct, it's consonant guy lol,
Ok I probably made those border edges unknowingly while trying out hot keys for selecting edges. But I'm glad i did because the content in your vids is all new to me and i bet it's going to come in really handy.
Will try this tomorrow thanks again.

CTBRAM- What app you use to record your videos? Does it do HD? or 1920/1080? Was it that happy word I like... Free?

Sorry this is off topic, but it sort of relates considering the videos posted

There's camstudio as well which is open source, it does the same job but the interface is not as polished. We tried it a few months back, but had some problems with the file size, however I'm sure that can be fixed with some tinkering so it's worth checking out.

thanks guys!

This may be what I am looking for, will definitely check it out.

Will definitely help me be able to learn how to convey the lingo in Maya after

doing a few "go-back to" tutorials for myself
