Invisible (unshaded) polygons?

user added image

In this screen grab you can see some faces around the rear that are selectable and have wire-frames, but the shaded view doesn't see them. What might I be doing wrong here?

-1- inverted normals, go to the polygons subset in maya then go to normals and click reverse, small note; you need to select the faces you want to affect
-2-sometimes after an operation ( a spilt or whatever) maya doesn't automatically applies the shader to it, simple fix though and that is to re apply the shader

It wasn't reversed normals and even re-applying the shader didn't work, I ended up just re-making it. Sometimes it's quicker than trying to work out why something is weird. Thanks for explaining those areas for me.

The problem re-occurred, and this time I re-applied the shader and it worked.
