This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

Tools locked

Hello, I begin to create NURBS and I like that (much more than polygons). But something strange is happening sometimes : when I select "control vertex" and want to move several vertex, my "rotate tool" or "translate tool" or "scale tool" are locked ! They are on the scene but nothing happens when I click on these arrows. The same thing happens when I select "Hull". user added imageWhy ??

Thank you very much.

I have seen this question before and I don't know if we ever really figured out what caused it or how to fix it.

Do me a favor and grab a screen shot of your object with a CV selected and the move manipulator active. I want to see a cv and the move tool on.

If we can't figure it out I might be able to look at your file and see if something is a miss there.

Also, try deleting history.

Also, try resetting your manipulator settings.

Tool locked

Thank you for your answers. Here is a screen shot. The translate tool locked just after having added some isoparms. (I'm following a tutorial video from this website, "Santa Claus").

Yeah that is the exact behavior I saw in the forums before. After inserting isoparms the manipulator freezes. I use nurbs alot and do not eer recall seeing this so I will have to do some research to see what causes it.

Have you tried rebuilding the surface using the cv's checkbox and deleting history?

This is not a terrible solution as it would force you to reparameterize your mesh and I am just looking for anything that might affect the behavior you are seeing.

Okay from what I can tell this seems to be a settings issue. Go to windows>seetings/preferences>preferences then choose edit/reset default settings. then see if the problem persists.

BE VERY MINDFUL OF ANY EXTRA/INADVERTANT KEYSTROKES AS YOU ARE MODELING. It is very easy to turn on and off things by accident in maya that will drive you literally INSANE! As an example just press the b-key and you are in soft select mode. People just learning turn this on all the time. I think I see this question come up at least once every couple months.

Thank you but the problem persists... but I noticed one thing : when I close Maya and open it again, the surface has changed : it took into account the modifications which I tried to bring. But as I could not see these modifications before in action, the result is surprising. The tools are not frozen any more. But the problem comes back if I put some isoparms.

This is sounding more and more like a graphics card or graphics driver or both problem. It really sounds like the screen is not updating properly.

What are your system specs? Most importantly what is you graphics card (make, model) and when was the last time you updated the drivers? Note installing the latest drivers does not always ensure the best results, especially with consumer cards.

just to be ABSOLUTELY sure it's not a settings thing. Close maya. Go to your documents folder and rename the maya folder. Restart maya this will generate a new documents/maya folder with all default settings. Now see if the problem exists. If it does then you are most likely having a graphics hardware / driver problem.

You can restore all your original settings by closing maya, and replacing the documents / maya folder with the original one you renamed.

This may sound silly, but did you hit caps lock?
