Banging head on desk for three days

I am just learning Maya, on the 2013 student version for Mac. I am trying to use mental ray, but I can’t find it. It doesn’t show up in the tab of the render settings window, and I have looked in the plug-in manager for mayatomr, but it doesn’t show up at all. I have even loaded every plugin in the manager, in case it had a different name, but no luck. When I look in the application folder, the mental ray folder is there, and is full of files, but I can't get it to show up in the plugin manager.

Need answers before I kick my computer down the stairs and into the street. Thanks for any help.

hmm I can understand your frustration. I have not checked but is mental ray included in the student version of maya? If so I have included a screen shot of where it should be. In version 2013 of maya it is on it's own section in the plugin manager.

I have included a screen shot. I am not sure about how it is on a mac though.

If you cannot find it in the plugin manager go to the maya 2013 folder and see if there is a mental ray sub folder to see of it was part of the installer for the student version. Not sure what else I can offer. Best of luck though.

thanks stwert I thought so but was not sure. Then I am guessing it should appear in it's own section in the plugin manager. That seems to be the only thing they changed from earlier versions of maya where is was just buried in main plugins section.

I am also not familiar with mac so there might be some difference there. But one thing I know for sure is that it should be part of the main default installation. So it should not be like there was a checkbox missed during the install.

I have looked in the application folder, and the mental ray plugin folder is there. When I try and connect using the browse button in the plugin manager I get the following message:

// Error: file: /Applications/Maya.app/Contents/scripts/others/pluginWin.mel line 665: initializePlugin function failed (Mayatomr)

I have tried completely uninstalling Maya and then downloading it again, but I get exactly the same result. I've spent three days searching every forum and can't even find anyone who has encountered this same problem.

I really need an answer to this. I’m trying hard to learn Maya, but I’m constantly finding myself spending days on end trying to figure out some technical quirk that has nothing to do with learning the actual program. It is incredibly frustrating.

Sorry it should be there and automatically installed. I am not a mac person so I don't know what else to suggest. There are some mac guys in the forum that might be able to give you suggestions but to be honest it should just install and be there if it's not then you might have a hardware compatibility issue but as I do not own a mac I can only guess.

Thanks for your help. I am wondering if it is a hardware problem, but it shouldn't be. I'm on a brand new mac with an AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB graphics card. Has anyone heard of graphics card compatibility issues with mental ray?

The full error message I get when i try and connect is: // mental ray for Maya 2013
// Error: line 1: Cannot find procedure "mentalrayForMaya". //
// Error: (Mayatomr) : setup command execution failed //
// Error: file: /Applications/Maya.app/Contents/scripts/others/pluginWin.mel line 665: initializePlugin function failed (Mayatomr) //

Hey, did you ever find a solution to your problem. I have a student with the same issue, students version, Maya 2013.

Thanx!

I'm using Maya 2013 Student version and it's working just fine. I'm using Mac as well, just got a new machine, but it worked fine as well when using my old one (also maya 2013), which had the nVidia GeForce 9400M 256mb graphic card. I'm no hardware expert, but i'm guessing your card is better.

Should be right in the bottom and look like this (student version):

Possible solution

I know this thread is getting a bit old, however I searched for this issue and this site popped up. Offering a solution here so that others might find it later.

I had moved the maya.app out of the autodesk folder and into my applications folder for easier access. When I moved it back in it's original folder (Applications/Autodesk/maya2013) everything was smooth sailing.
