Tile rendering

I have to render a large scene @ 25" square at 300 DPI which is causing crashes. I know there is a tile rendering technique that allows the render to be split up in sections, but I can't find clear steps on doing this. I believe its done either thru Batch Rendering or the Command Line. I'm MAC and would appreciate any help

Thank you
