Can't see geo or duplicate..

Sorry for all the questions folks but my Maya 2012 either has a lot of bugs or was coded on a Friday, or Monday..lol. Now I'm attempting to drop in geo (plane) and I can't see it. The move tool (translate) shows up but I can't see the plane. I cleared history and I normally am pretty good about doing that anyhow so that's not the issue. I also am trying to ctrl-d some objects and I can't see them either. Same thing the tools show up but no geo. I've tried to go into hypershade and apply another lambert but even my hypershade isn't right, it shows up without the default lambert even. I create another and apply it and still nothing shows up.

Under the "show" menu in the panel, is the object type checked? Have you tried switching out your prefs?

Yes I reset them, again. I exported the project into a different file and it worked for a bit but then it started doing it again. I have no clue what's going on but it's very frustrating. I can get five or six pieces of geo made then I drop something new in and I can't see it.
