Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

crashing when smoothing

Hi all- i'm new to the forum and have a rather urgent issue with Maya.
I am using Maya 2012 on windows XP through Parallels on my MacBook Pro. ( this is because I cannot get a student version of Maya to work on Mac OS Lion).

Anyway, I have a model which I will need to render soon, however whenever I as much as try to view the model as smooth (pressing 3) the program crashes completely.

I have 8GB of memory and allocate much of this to windows XP when i'm using Maya, so I cannot figure out how to fix this issue.

Any help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!
many thanks

Try smoothing it by going to Mesh>Smooth.

It may be that Maya is using a graphics feature that Parallels doesn't have implemented.

probably your mesh has some problems, try cleaning its history, and then go to Mesh -> Cleanup, and clean the mesh up, you can try all of the settings up, then try smoothD, but some of the settings might change some geometry, (like Remove Geometry Nonmanifold geometry, Lamina Faces) if you have a good result you can try to uncheck some of the these settings, i once had a similar problem and i believe it worked that way. But if the problem is really bad geometry, i advise you to cleane it up and then work on the changed geometry.

I know this is an old thread but the solution I have found works for me most of the time when I'm having this problem. I've tried to delete history that doesn't work, I've also tried to cleanup mesh but there is nothing wrong with it.
So the solution is to simply select the mesh export it as obj then re-import it. Then it can be smoothed without a problem. For some reason this fixes the problem for me. Hope this helps some of you with this problem.
