Vertices are selected whenever I select a face

As the attached picture shows: the vertices around the face are selected whenever I select a face. This gets in the way of modeling very much, as I am not able to extrude objects, or move it sideways. Extruding it acts as though I am simply moving the face, and moving it sideways acts as though I am scaling it.

Any help on how to disable this would be greatly appreciated!

Try the following:

Right click, choose vertices.
Marquee select all vertices so that they are all selected.
Marquee select somewhere else in the screen so that they are now deselected.
Switch back to face mode.

Does the issue still persist? If yes, you might need to reset your preferences.
