Could not select the target vertices without selecting the ones around them

Hi all, I was editing some vertices in the mesh of this helmet, but when I tried to select the two target vertices, the ones around them were also selected, what did I do wrong?user added image

You have pressed the "B" button for soft select, just press the "B" button again...........dave
