jukebox wallbox - please crit!

Hi everyone,

still slowly learning 3d in my spare time, this is the first personal project I've taken to this point and tried to pull everything I've learned so far into a completed image. I'd really appreciate any crits - will probably leave the image for a while then come back to it with fresher eyes and the crits in mind cause I've been staring at it for a long time now. I used Maya, Mental Ray, Photoshop, Illustrator, PT Gui Pro for the HDRI, and After Effects to composite. Thanks to everyone here for helping with my questions along the way.

i think thats pretty superb.

on first glance, without seeing the wire shots and breakdown, i didnt know what was photo and what was 3d. Then i thought if that jukebox is 3d then the salt n pepper trinkets and the ketchup in the background could be aswell, cause the jukebox is excellent.

if i had to force a crit - and im forcing it - it would be with the depth of field...
as, though i know with certain lenses you can get such contrasts, the jukebox seems too close to the background objects to be so sharply, and contrastingly, focused.

love the jukebox. textures are great

thanks guys - thinking about it now I subconsciously dialed back on the blur a bit when mixing in the zdepth pass, i didnt want the detail in my textures to go after spending so long creating them!

That reminds me many years ago following a tutorial that at the end said put motion blur on a vehicle, I just spent a week fine detailing it just to see it vanish with the motion bluruser added image..................dave

awesome work!

but I also think: you could tweak the zDepth a bit ... and maybe brighten the shadow a tiny bit up ...

but to be honest it´s still very nice!

That does look pretty sweet. Textures look great, metal is really convincing. The Dof has already been mentioned but there is something about the contact shadow that's bugging me. It looks like AO that's too heavy since it's spreading out onto the table.

thanks all for the feedback so far - all I can see is a big black shadow now - I wondered if anyone could give me some advice on the AO pass, it was my first time doing one and I wasn't sure if i should do it with the glass hidden or not, in the end I went with the glass hidden so there was more shadow detail in the inside part. I think the contact shadow issue might be a mip matte shadow issue, its quite dark on the beauty render.

The AO without the glass is a better bet. Also are you layering the AO on top of everything?

i should be able to render out the shadows on their own to tweak them, i did a tutorial on it but lost steam towards the end. the AO is over the top of everything at the moment, then the dof and match grain in after effects on top of that. also just noticed the difference in colour and clarity from my Eizo screen at work to my AOC at home, theyre both calibrated but i think my home one may be a bit bright.

Check out this blog post. Zap talks about the issues of slapping an AO pass on top of everything and where it would be better applied. For me it it tends to look like some kind of residue, like trying to wash ink off your hands, there's just this odd tint that make your hands look dirty.
