Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

I am trying to make this light again on 2015, and I read in the article that the build_in node is already included in there, and I've done it before but it seems I can't remember how to attach the buildin_light(after I already connect the message of the area_light to the light node of buildin) node to any mesh in the scene ?!

I have it as utility node and therefore I can't select assign to selected object or drag and drop it on it!

Can you please guys refresh me here how did you connected the "buildin_Light" node to the mesh ('m not asking for the message connection , I've solved this)...

...can't find my old file to check how i did it!user added image

I saw it and exactly what I was explaining was I can't assign utility node with "assign selected to object"

Middle mouse drag and drop or right click it in Hypershade and select assign to selected objects etc.

Not possible since this is Utility node, maybe I am mistaken something ?!

That's weird, its a shader for me, even gets connected to a shading group node and all. Post the scene file if you can.

The scene is in massive size, I don't think would be smart to send it toy you.

I am attaching a picture of what it shows me when I hold right mouse button to usually "assign selected material to object" ...

I am also noticing that in the image of the other guy, the node it is into Utilities window!

If you can make a small test scene that would help. I'm using 2015 and I'm can't recreate this problem.

There it is ? I am sure I am doing something wrong, most of the times it isn't because of Maya!

I think something is up with your installation because I was able to right click and assign it in your scene. I'm uploading a file, see if that works.

Hmmm... I have the same issue. Maya just does not want to create the shadinggroup node for the object light node. I had to hijack the shadinggroup of a dummy material to get it to work.

That is so strange. The scene Georgi posted didn't have a shading group for the light object node but one got auto created once I assigned it to the geometry. o.O

Yes it is. I'm also used to Maya creating the shadinggroup node automatically.

Hi GeorgiStamenov

- Create any ordinary material.
- Break the connection between the material node and the shading group node. You can delete the material node.
- Drag and drop the builtin_object_light into the Material Shader and Photo Shader slots (If you want to use photons and GI) under the customer shaders tab of the mental ray section of the shading group.
- Drag and drop the shading group node onto the geo you want to assign it to.

Remember to uncheck the "Export with Shading Engine" box user added image

That is the work around but I'm really curious as to why it's behaving like that for Georgi to begin with. Have you tried clearing prefs and even re-installing? I wonder if this is an with issue with the student version.
