Merging Vertices?

I have a cube...
I have a cylinder with sub divisions set to 8 (Octagon)... I cut it in half
Now I want to connect the cube with the octagon...

Merging vertices doesn't do anything...

You'll need to combine the geometry first so they are one object. Select both objects and do a Mesh > Merge command. Then you will be able to use the Merge command on components.
