I'm using the append polygon tool to build the eye area but cant build a face properly. Here's two images. The right show the problem and the left show the shape id like to get.

Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

I did try 'spt' before i posted but couldn't do it cos the end second click wouldn't be at a line, as the right image shows
