Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

as for my question:
my first plan to learn Maya was to do some reading on a topic, then do a tutorial, then do my own little project and move on to the next topic.

this didn't real work out, so I'll try something else:

I'll do a lot of the modelling video tutorials (instead of just watching them) and that should be getting my skills up quite good, then go over to texturing, animation...
I seemed to lack the ability to actually make something good on my own and I'm pretty sure I won't get it too soon either.

I planned on buying 35 points so I can download the T-rex, monster, mech and sword tutorials.
are these the best ones to learn me?

do you think that'll work?
anyone else here know a good way to get started (again)?

haha... What I do is just create a simple storyboard, simple animation. Start up maya and then start things. Create a simple object.. hmmm do not know how, aaahh, help file !... hmmm not what i am looking for, oke then a forum.

Answer = bla bla bla....

Oke, now i know how to create object, on to the next level, moving the object. Help file --> forum... Now I know how to create and move the object..

Now I want to create an object and move it to point X and then Explode the object in 10000 pieces with a massive combustion effect !!!!!.. user added image... so look up tutorials on how to blow up stuff, combustion. Now I know how.. and now I can create an object, move and explode it in to pieces... ect ect.. Thats is how I learn stuff. Bit by bit you advance a little further in to awesome Maya user added image

Tutorials are good. The movies I downloaded are good, explain very well. Watch the movie an then do it our self !... ooohhh.. also read stuff.. you never know.

The most imprtant thing is to practice, fail, practice and fail etc.. repeat.

if one method do not work, then try another and keep it up. Noone learn how to do great 3D from a single tutorial, video or a book.. But if you combine the tutorials, books, videos then you will learn some tricks which you might be able to use in another situation.

ok thx, but what about those tutorials?

Is the T-rex better than shark?

Is monster too hard because it looks a bit out of my league.

Is sword something I should only do if I plan on modelling a sword?

What do I learn from the Mech tutorial that I don't see in the others?

The NURBS house, anything new there, that's not in the shark or T-rex?


I hope you don't mind me nagging like this, but I don't feel like buying movies that explain basically the same thing.

-The T-rex is all polys
-The shark is nurbs (plus is still being corrected for sound)
-The house is a bit old and outdated, maybe wait for the nurbs car tutorial for that one
-The mech shows rigging... I would suggest downloading mikes character rig tutorial as it shows you all the way through including painting weights and blend shapes
-The monster head is a massive project but does show a lot
- The cyber dog rig is a very advanced rig setup, with set driven keys all over
- The sword modleing seemed to go down alright as I did see a few wips (this is nurbs)
- theres a new cps modeling one that is really clear and easy to follow!
- The walk cycle (new one) Is very good to, takes you through the whole walk with body movement!

So best thing is decide what you want to go for.... Just sit there and practise mate!!
