Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Odd Appendages

Please have a look at the image below, it shows two polygons sticking out awkwardly...

This was achieved by creating a simple poly thing (just messing with paint) which I then smoothed *1. I then began to paint the object exploring the UV texture editor after after automatically mapping it. Then I deleted the two polygons and put them back using append polygon tool. But as you can see they didn't go back smoothly...

I could re-smooth the object, which gets rid of the problem, but I wondered why my new two polys stick out like a sore thumb... Does smoothing do something to the surfaces other than divide them?

I think its got to do with hard edges. Just make the edges on those two polys soft, and it should look normal.

Try going to edit polygons, normals, and then soften harden. The higher the # the softer the edges. try it, should fix it (maybe) user added image

Luv you boys! Excellent response time too! Here is the image again after selecting the polygon edges and clicking edit polygons>normals>soften/harden at its default setting.

Never thought to try just selecting the poly faces and doing the same...
