compositing software!

Hello chaps and chap'esses,
Can you tell me what is the main package when dealing with compositing, Ive been playing around with Premiere but my final output quality seems abit naff, compared to each rendered frame from Maya.
Basically I want to take my individual rendered frames and put them all together and be able to adjust the size of the final movie to what ever I need.

Many thanks and Merry Chrismas to you all.
