Paint Weights Problems...

Ok. I'm stumped on this one.

After smooth binding the skin to the skeleton, there are places that are influenced by joints they shouldn't be. Ok, this is normal... so I go in and begin to edit them by adding and removing weights as needed. Now, here's the dilemma: if I remove weights from a joint and select another joint, when I go back to the first joint, the weights I just removed are back.

Why?

You can use the hold weights button in the tool settings to prevent that. Also it is better to add weights rather than to remove. When you add weight to a point, the weights for other joints are automatically lowered because the sum is always 1.

well then how do you prevent the weights from being added when you bind skin?

You'll end up tweaking the weights no matter what you do user added image
But one thing that seems to help is to lower the Max Influences to 2 or 3 in the Smooth Bind Options. Try playing with the other settings too...

heh. I figured it out and came to reply what I found and saw your reply was the exact thing I found. You were correct kbrown. The max influences were set to 5. I lowered them and it localized the influence area for each joint. Thanks! user added image
