Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

now this is impressive - you say you started with a poly cube, damn i'll be lucky if i can make a block flats with a poly cube user added image.

How have you mde the legs and arms, have you used poly cylinders and worked it from there?

Thanks for your questions. Dude dont put yourself down - chest out stomach in, thats better. We all have to start somewhere, jeez I wouldnt have even dreamed of doing this sort of model about 4 years ago, just take it easy and work up.

Yep all from 2 poly cubes, one for the head and one for the body etc then connected together with patience. Everything is all extruded, cut and shaped, have a follow thru the thread you'll see its progress among the weird and wonderful crits!!

so i take it it was a cube for the head and a cube for the rest as i see where the join for neck is

VERY nice! I couldn't read all 27 pages of commentary, but I noticed you got rid of most of that "crease" that everybody mentioned early on. There still seems to be a bit of creasing along the bridge of the nose, but I imagine you are working on that! One thing I do is soften ALL of the edges along the seam where the two halves meet (and I set the softness to the maximum value of 180 when I do). The crease still exists along the nose, and if you haven't already softened the normals, do give that a try!

Thanks for your comments. 19 pages by the way - 27!! LOL - Not quite. The surfaces are subd right now so its pointless even going anywhere near the soften/harden edges, set normals etc but I'm well aware of those, thanks
Also the figure isnt joined together yet either, hence the crease!! one side is an instance so I can get an idea of form straight away whilst I work on the other....

heres the final concept BEFORE it even goes on my site so you lot are priveliged!!

The hair is different as this was my original idea for it, but at the end of the day it wasnt practical in a technical way as I would have had penetrating geometry on the cheeks and the back of the neck into the jacket, which was why I opted for ponytail style again...

whether by choice or need; the pony tail is better. The concept is too tough but the pony tail adds some feminine, removes SOME of the boyish look; so your left with a character that appears feminine but with a veiled,,. sense of strength. subtle
