mc-fleury,
I am not sure how ou are going about this, but here is the basics...

1. The first thing you need to do is if it is a polygon surface, then you need to unwrap the UV's so that there are no uv's overlapping each other and all of the uv's must fit in the 0-1 grid. If your surface is a NURBS surface I think that the UV's do not need to be unwrapped. Also, you can not apply fur on Sub Divisions. If thats the case then you need to convert them back to polygons.

2. Once that is done, make sure that the normals are pointing in the right direction. If you want the fur to be placed inside the object then the normals need to be point inwards. If you want the the fur to be placed outside of the object then the normals need to be pointing outwards. You can find out which direction the normals are pointing by going to display->polygons->normals. To hide the normals you need to do the above step again, display->polygons->normals.

3. Once the normals are facing the right direction, you first select the your polygon surface and then you need to apply a fur description to it. There are 2 ways you can do this. The first method is by clicking on one of the presets which are found in the fur shelf. The second way is by switching the menu set to rendering, which should now give you the fur menu. Now you can go to fur->attach fur description->new. You should now see that the fur has been applied to your object. Also, If you don't see fur as one of the menu options, then this means you need to load the fur plug-in by going to window->settings/preferences->plug-in manager. This will open up the plug-in manager dialog box, which there will be a setting called Fur.mll. Click on loaded, and then click on close. You should now have the fur menu.

4. next click on one of the fur strands which this will bring up the furDescription attributes window. This will have 3 tabs. The first being FurFeedback. This tab handles the location info to the fur. The second tab is the FurFeedbackshape. This tab is for the preview settings which gives you the basics of how the fur is layed onto the object. The last tab is the FurDescription. This tab is for setting the colors of the hairs, how much density should the fur have etc.

... and you could find all these instructions all in the help files. All you had to do is type in the keyword "fur", click on search and it will give all sorts of things about fur. The only thing I can't find is how the bake button works in the fur description tab, and if it is possible to convert the fur to a file texture.

Just a thought, haven't looked in the fur attributes, so I don't know if there is a length attribute, but if there is, is it possible to control the length of the fur with a greyscale map like with eg. spec.? Like black=0 white =1 and that stuff...
