WOW! That's kinda low, $2,500 a month?! Not including taxes! What's the cost of living out there?

It's still worth going to school, as it looks good on your portfolio and as djknucles1 said, will affect your paycheck for quite a while. But anyway you should be learning stuff in and out of school. I'm learning maya on my own right now cause I'm in high school, but going to school where there are experts that can help you improve is invaluable in my opinion. There's no reason to reinvent the wheel y'know.

ok, so let's say 25K a year then, Divided by 12 (months) = $2,083 a month. Minus Taxes it all comes down to around $1,800. That's insane.

lol, my mistake. I read your post too fast and thought you said $2,500 a year. Now that would be an embarrassing job!

Yeah, $1800 a month is like rent in CA. haha user added image I was a contractor and had to send $2000 every 3 months out to the IRS to pay my own taxes. That was rough. But it was my first job and got my foot in the door of this fine industry I'm still in!

Yeah, right now I'm getting close to 50K but it barely covers my mortgage, utilities, expenses and car payment. Living in in Silicon Valley hurts sometimes. user added image

so anyway, yeah, money is relative to the cost of living. In my own experience in looking for jobs and talking to employers, it's the quality of the portfolio and the character of the person that is the most important. The amount of money you can get is 99% based on experience. Maybe Rockstar is that exception that looks at schooling, but I'd say the vast majority don't.

Not to say schooling can't be good. *I* went to school and I'm glad I did. I'm just saying it's not a prerequisite to getting a job.

And of course I'm speaking mainly about game studios. I don't have film studio experiences.

I feel that a great portfolio and a good attitude and a prefessional approach and understanding aint gonna hold you back, even if compared to a degree.

Got to say i'm hoping that a studio does look at qualifications!

I agree. If you love what you do then the money won't matter. It will eventually come. user added image
